The science of sweat

To first understand how to create an effective natural deodorant, we needed to delve into science to understand how sweat works. In a nutshell, it’s not your sweat that smells but the bacteria on your skin.

When bacteria comes into contact with your sweat, body odour occurs. By neutralising the bacteria, you’re removing the cause of bad smells.

There are two main reasons that many natural deodorants haven’t been effective:

• They don’t target bacteria and only contain strong smells to mask your body odour. This is often quite polarising and doesn’t address the cause of the issue.
• A lot of natural deodorants typically use baking soda (bicarbonate soda). While this may be somewhat effective as it may absorb sweat, baking soda can also be quite harsh and easily irritate your skin. Armpit rash, anyone?

The difference between an antiperspirant and a deodorant

Another important thing to understand is the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants.

Antiperspirants are all in the name – they stop you from perspiring, a.k.a sweating. To do this, many antiperspirants contain aluminium to block your pores.

On the other hand, deodorants allow you to sweat, but either mask or neutralise bad smells.

Additionally, many deodorants and antiperspirants also contain ethanol alcohol to help the product dry quicker. This is another ingredient that can dry out your skin, and we wanted to avoid that.
